The last time I felt like actively celebrating my birthday with a full-blown party, I was 8 years old. As I crossed the threshold into my 40s, I lost track of the multitude of reasons  to celebrate life. My 40th year was a year of wildest dreams come true and I found it time to share my small slice of the 10,000 gifts in the best way I know how--- through the hopeful rhythm in soul music, through tastily prepared soul food. I hope the music beckons you to dance, enjoy yourself like nobody’s watchin’ while you savor some lip smacking goodness from each of your fingers,  one by precious one.  

Bring your family. Your friends of all ages,
the ones who like to dance, those that raise their hands.
Invite the ones who let the sauces sit unabashedly on their lips. 
Bring the folks who need a beat rumbling through their seat, 
for whom the bass line thumps like a Siren of Funk.
Bring the ache that keeps you awake,
that one, about what is left undone.
Let it surf-fly through the dovetail wail caught in the throat of the sax as it welcomes you home. ​
